Duka I
Jomo Tariku’s Duka Stool draws inspiration from the traditional Ethiopian stools commonly used in rural and nomadic communities, known for their practicality and cultural significance. Historically, duka stools were lightweight, portable, and durable, crafted for daily use by men during gatherings, ceremonies, or while herding livestock. Tariku’s modern interpretation maintains the simplicity and functionality of the traditional design, with a focus on Ethiopian craftsmanship.
Typically carved from a single piece of locally sourced hardwood like acacia, the original duka stools feature short, sturdy legs designed to provide stability on uneven terrain. The slightly concave seat offers comfort, while the stool’s minimalistic form reflects the utility-driven aesthetic of Ethiopian design. In addition to their practical use, more elaborately decorated duka stools symbolized status, particularly when used by elders or community leaders. Tariku’s Duka Stool pays homage to these cultural traditions while introducing a contemporary flair.
